While everyone in the Netherlands is discussing the wolves re-entering and reclaiming their place in our country, other animals are even entering our cities without humans so much as blinking their eyes. The same is happening in other places in Europe. Danish researchers noticed how in a couple of cities hare populations are thriving. The reasons are obvious: humans are claiming more and more place for themselves, forcing animals to live in their vicinities. Rural areas show signs of decreasing hare populations. Meanwhile, many city areas are getting greener and more biodiverse through policy. Creating more green areas with many different local plants, makes cities more attractive for hares and other animals like foxes and hedgehogs. In a sense, cities are growing into new natural habitats, paradoxically making humans and animals live closer together.
